Epic Star Wars Small Bedroom Ideas On A $500 Budget

As we approach the final reveal of our One Room Challenge, we’re excited to share how we transformed a small bedroom into a Star Wars-themed haven on a budget of just $500. Over the past eight weeks, we’ve put in the elbow grease to paint, sand, stain, dye, and repurpose every element in this room to create a space that’s both functional and fun. The end result is a room that not only reflects Aiden’s love for Star Wars but also has the potential to grow with him as his interests evolve.

As we’ve shared before, our goal was to design a bedroom that would remain relevant even when Aiden outgrows his current obsession. With that in mind, we carefully planned every detail to ensure this themed room would be enjoyable and engaging for years to come. Let’s dive into the specifics of how we achieved this impressive transformation on a tight budget.

Bedroom Before Makeover

Bedroom Before Makeover

Just 8 weeks prior, this small bedroom was transformed into an industrial-chic space. I still cherished its original charm – the kelly green striped ceiling added a pop of color, while the wood and pipe desk with shelves brought a touch of edginess. However, as my boys decided to switch rooms, it was time to give the space a fresh new look. Our mission was to revamp this industrial-style bedroom into a modern Jedi retreat without breaking the bank. We aimed to stay within a budget of just $500.

Did we succeed in keeping costs under control? As you follow along with our transformation journey, don’t forget to share your thoughts and pin this post for later inspiration.

Star Wars Small Bedroom Ideas

As I embark on this small bedroom makeover, my primary concern is creating a space that will remain timeless and enduring. While it’s tempting to opt for a themed room that can bring instant personality, I’m not convinced it’s the best approach. After all, who can predict how long Aiden’s fascination with Star Wars will last? Inevitably, he’ll grow out of this phase, and I’d rather invest in a design that will continue to appeal to him as he matures.

Paint and LED Lights

To create a neutral base that can easily evolve with Aiden’s changing interests, we started by giving his bedroom a fresh makeover. We began by painting the ceiling in a flat black finish, followed by applying this color to 14 inches of wall space to create the illusion of a larger room. The walls were then painted Sherwin Williams Pure White, instantly brightening up the space. A key feature Aiden was eager to include was LED strip lighting.

While I have no issue with the lights themselves, I wanted to ensure they blended seamlessly into the design. Our solution was to conceal them behind moulding. At the color break, we installed cove moulding and then incorporated the LED strips. For the full tutorial, click here. The addition of LED lights has undoubtedly added a unique and modern flair to Aiden’s room.

With the remote control, the lights can be easily changed to numerous colors and even sync with Bluetooth to dance along to music. Perhaps most impressively, there are no visible cords.

The Bed

When working with a limited budget, it’s essential to make do with what you already have. For us, that meant giving some TLC to our second-hand bed, which we purchased eight years ago on Facebook marketplace. At the time, it was in need of some serious love. The drawers were broken and stuck, so we set about fixing them with glue and brads. To give them a smoother operation, we also added some graphite. A fresh coat of black paint on the drawer fronts brought everything back to life.

Today, the bed looks like new, and its neutral bones mesh perfectly with our color scheme. In this compact bedroom, there simply isn’t room for a separate dresser, so having the built-in desk and storage in the bed is crucial. While the bed’s foundation remains understated, we’ve added a pop of personality with Star Wars bedding and a Darth Vader plushie – a thoughtful touch that brings our theme full circle.

Aiden’s love for his desk and shelves didn’t waver even when he swapped rooms with Gavin. As a budding artist, the desk has become his sanctuary where he can unleash his creativity and bring his masterpieces to life. The addition of Star Wars memorabilia adds a touch of personality to the space, making it not just a functional area but also a reflection of his interests.

What was once a rustic wood and pipe desk with shelves underwent a transformation with a sleek black stain, giving it a modern makeover that seamlessly blends into the small bedroom’s layout. The result is a cleverly designed homework station that also provides ample storage for Aiden’s belongings. Whether you’re looking to create your own homework haven or seeking inspiration for your own space, this versatile desk and shelves combination is sure to impress.

The Nightstand

In this bedroom, space is at a premium. To address this, we plan to construct another set of drawers on the left side of the bed. As a result, our nightstand needs to be designed as a floating piece. Rather than purchasing a new one, we decided to upcycle an old traditional piece my mom had stored away. This creative reuse approach allowed us to save money – the only additional expenses were for the drawer pull, paint, and moulding required to give the piece its modern geometric design.

To maintain continuity in the room, we opted to reuse the existing curtains, giving them a sleek makeover with black dye. For those curious about the curtain-panel revamp process, you can find the step-by-step guide here. In addition to breathing new life into old fabrics, fabric dye offers an accessible and budget-friendly means of transforming any textile in your home.

Bringing life to the bedroom’s neutral shell is where the magic of Star Wars decor truly shines! To achieve this, I found five affordable canvas wall panels on Amazon for just $20. Mounted to a wood frame, they instantly add a touch of galactic flair.

For an added layer of excitement, we incorporated Aiden’s impressive collection of light sabers using clear acrylic holders that can be mounted horizontally or vertically.

Not only do these unique display pieces bring in the Star Wars vibe, but they also serve as clever storage solutions for his toys.

The open shelves are a perfect showcase for all of Aiden’s Star Wars memorabilia, featuring framed art from Hobby Lobby alongside items he’s collected over time. His Lego Star Wars creations take center stage, and we were thrilled to rediscover his Death Star suitcase, an unexpected find at the thrift store years ago.

As we curated his collection, we stumbled upon his own artistic takes on beloved Star Wars characters, making this display even more meaningful. To maintain the room’s modern aesthetic, we’re grateful for the gift of a sleek, round ottoman with black legs and white upholstery from Wovenbyrd. It’s an ideal addition to this cozy bedroom, serving as both a seat at the desk and a stylish accent piece.

Breaking Down the $500 Budget

The Star Wars-themed small bedroom makeover was a thrilling project, and I’m excited to share the details of what I spent to bring it to life. The breakdown is as follows: a $99 paint job, $80 for cove moulding, $18 on LED strip lights, $20 for bedding, $32 for stain and supplies, $25 on fabric dye, $18 for screen moulding, $3 on a drawer pull, $27 for light saber holders, $60 on lamps, $25 on decor and fabric, and finally, $90 for framed art.

The grand total came out to be $497 – a proud achievement considering our initial budget was $500! And if you’re eager to see the finished project, I invite you to click here and explore Gavin’s bedroom makeover for yourself.
