Small Master Bedroom Makeover
As our family grew, so did our desire for a cozy retreat in our home. The impending arrival of baby number seven prompted us to give our master bedroom a much-needed makeover. Given the smaller size of this room compared to our previous master bedrooms, we knew it was essential to be intentional and minimalist in our design approach. I’m excited to share with you the progress we’ve made in transforming this space into a peaceful sanctuary that meets our needs.
Here is what our bedroom looked like when we first moved in and right before the makeover.
Goals for the master bedroom
For a sense of serenity and relaxation, my ultimate objective for my bedroom is to create an environment that instantly puts us at ease. This tranquil retreat should also be meticulously organized, as tidiness holds immense importance for me. In contrast to the feeling of cluttered chaos, I aim to cultivate cozy, comfortable spaces that envelop us in warmth and tranquility.
Design
Eclectic style is my go-to for designing cozy retreats, like my bedroom sanctuary. I’ve skillfully blended modern, minimalist, and farmhouse elements to create a unique space that exudes serenity without breaking the bank. The result is an airy, bright oasis that perfectly reflects my personal taste.
White Walls
To kick off our master bedroom makeover, we began by addressing some essential tasks. First, we tackled the drywall repairs before giving the room a fresh coat of paint in a crisp white hue. We opted for Chantilly Lace from Benjamin Moore, which provides a clean and timeless base for the space. The decision to go with a pure white was driven by my preference for a bold contrast that highlights the various design elements within the room.
The black accents we’ve incorporated create a striking visual balance, while the white walls effectively reflect light and amplify the sense of brightness. Moreover, I believe the clean and uncluttered appearance of the space has a calming effect on the mind.
Closet
In our cozy abode, we’ve learned to maximize every inch of space. Our bedroom is compact, with only room for our bed and nightstands. To accommodate our limited storage needs, we’ve cleverly relocated our dresser to the closet. As fashion enthusiasts with a minimalist approach to clothing, we don’t require much storage, making this arrangement work beautifully for us.
In fact, by removing the closet doors, we’ve created an illusion of greater space within the room, while also encouraging ourselves to maintain a tidy and organized closet.
Nightstands
The sight of a clutter-free surface has a profound effect on my mood, making me feel instantly more uplifted. To maintain this sense of serenity, I strive to keep our nightstands uncluttered and organized. Our Ikea nightstands, which we picked up for just $40, provided the perfect canvas for our DIY project. We stained the drawers to give them a cohesive look that blends seamlessly with the rest of the room’s aesthetic.
The inclusion of drawers not only helps conceal clutter but also prevents it from building up on the surface. Furthermore, having these storage spaces has been invaluable in keeping all baby essentials neatly tucked away within easy reach.
Bed
We embarked on a quest for the perfect bed, one that would withstand the test of time. Our trusty Ikea bed frame had served us well, but eventually, its structural integrity began to deteriorate. With no choice but to seek out a replacement, we ventured onto Facebook Marketplace in search of a new bed frame that wouldn’t break the bank. My thrifty nature got the better of me, and I fell for a vintage metal-style frame at an unbeatable price.
Excitement turned to despair, however, as our new acquisition began to disintegrate within a month’s time. The once-solid structure now lay in pieces, leaving unsightly gashes on our hardwood floors. Our second-hand nightmare had come to an end, and we were left scrambling for a solution yet again. This experience left me shaken, but I eventually mustered the courage to take a chance on a modern vintage metal bed frame from Amazon.
The gamble has paid off so far, with our new bed proving to be a sturdy and reliable companion.
Black Interior Door
While I’m enamored with all interior door colors, there’s something about black that really catches my eye. In fact, my partner and I recently gave our bedroom and bathroom doors a sleek makeover using Benjamin Moore’s Black Beauty hue. Our goal is to eventually paint every door on the top floor in this rich shade. The result? A stunning contrast between the bold, dramatic doors and the crisp white walls – the perfect blend of elegance and sophistication.
Wall Shelf
When we installed this shelf, our intention was to create a lush display of plants. There’s something inherently natural and calming about plant shelves that adds depth to a room. Unfortunately, my lack of a green thumb means I’ve struggled to keep any plant alive. So, the shelf has been repurposed as a bookcase instead. I’m hoping to add some vintage-looking volumes in the future. A lovely touch is the Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel statue that my step-grandmother gave me – it’s now nestled among the books and adds a warm, personal element.
Wall Decor
I’m a fan of understated elegance and simplicity in home decor. Our master bedroom reflects this approach, with a thoughtful selection of pieces that bring me joy. The wooden signs above my husband’s nightstand are a charming touch from Hobby Lobby, featuring a meaningful Bible quote that resonates with me. I also treasure the picture of Mother Mary with child Jesus on my side of the bed, courtesy of artist Bernadette Carstensen – it’s a personal favorite.
While there are still some items left to complete our small master bedroom makeover, I’m thrilled with the progress so far and look forward to tackling future projects, including installing new lighting, adding a rug, replacing Brian’s lamp, and eventually giving our closet a fresh facelift.
