Bedroom Decor Ideas That Feel Like A Spa Retreat
As the new year arrives, many of us are eager to refresh our living spaces. For me, there’s nothing more inviting than a peaceful bedroom retreat that awakens the senses and promotes well-being. In fact, I’ve been itching to tackle a big room makeover for weeks! With my partner Robert, we managed to complete a master bedroom transformation in just one day – a new record, indeed! Our friend Kristina was the lucky recipient of this thoughtful gift, and we’re thrilled with the result.
This year, rather than making lofty resolutions, I’m focusing on showing love and kindness through acts of service. Partnering with Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart, we were able to bring this vision to life. The story began in August when we gifted Kristina a stunning powder room makeover. During that project, she showed me the beautiful teal color she had painted her bedroom. I knew right then that this space deserved some extra TLC.
Kristina is not only an incredible preschool teacher and friend but also a cancer survivor, single mom, and pillar of our community. She truly deserves a serene oasis to call her own. In just 5 hours and for under $1,400, we transformed her bedroom into a tranquil retreat.

While I may not have started off on the right foot, capturing the space’s true essence proved to be a challenge when taking photos of the area with the blinds still closed.
Opt for light, airy textiles
The transformation was remarkable. By swapping out traditional blinds for woven shades and installing gauzy curtain panels, the room suddenly felt expansive. The window’s proximity to the neighboring wall on the left side meant I couldn’t hang curtains as high and wide as usual, but elevating them created a striking focal point. I’m particularly fond of pairing light-colored curtains with dark walls, as it maintains a sense of airiness and brightness.
Thankfully, Kristina had already selected a suitable bed and dresser, providing a solid foundation for our furniture arrangement.
Hang Up Nature-Inspired Art
To introduce visual diversity, I repurposed two abstract waterscape artworks that I had previously collected but not utilized during the McNay museum’s renovation project. These pieces, though initially intended for a different context, now contribute to the ambiance of the space by adding an element of visual intrigue.
Go for the Super Soft Bedding
By incorporating a few simple yet effective strategies, I managed to transform my bed into a cozy oasis without breaking the bank. The secret lies in combining affordable bedding essentials with thoughtful touches. For instance, I opted for a comforter set and sheets that are as soft as can be. To add an extra layer of plushness, I paired these items with neutral gray throw pillows and a striped lumbar pillow that adds visual interest without overpowering the overall aesthetic.
Place Mirrors on Windowless Walls to Reflect Light
The introduction of this gold mirror served as a subtle yet effective focal point above the bed, cleverly redirecting natural light from the window to illuminate the previously dimmer areas of the room.
Incorporate Textured Wood and Woven Baskets for an Earthy Vibe
To introduce a sense of natural charm, we incorporated two wooden nightstands into the space. These rustic pieces not only brought in an organic feel but also provided additional storage for Kristina through their drawers and accompanying baskets.
Don’t Forget Cozy Lighting
For a touch of sophistication, I have a weakness for marble and gold lamps. When it comes to creating an inviting ambiance, the right lighting temperature can make all the difference. A soft white light bulb with a gentle yellow hue, typically measured at 2700-3000 lumens, is ideal for producing a cozy atmosphere. This warm-toned illumination adds a sense of comfort and relaxation to any room, making it perfect for unwinding after a long day or hosting intimate gatherings.
Diffuse Essential Oils to Awaken Senses
As a firm advocate of using essential oil diffusers near bedtime – especially during the harsh winter months when fighting off a cold – I was thrilled to find this beautiful rattan diffuser. The accompanying trio of oils (eucalyptus, lavender, and peppermint) has become my go-to starter set for promoting clear airways, alleviating anxiety and insomnia, and providing an energy boost.
In addition to its functional benefits, the marble tray it came with is a thoughtful touch, perfect for keeping jewelry, remotes, and other knick-knacks organized and within reach. And let’s not overlook the stunning gold float frame – so lovely that I ended up purchasing one for our home as well.
Place Photos That Tug at Your Heartstrings
By framing what brings you joy, you’re not only elevating its visual appeal but also imbuing your space with a sense of positivity. For instance, I recently placed this sleek black marble picture frame on my nightstand alongside a tiny potted plant and a soft-glowing candle, instantly transforming the area into a cozy retreat that invites relaxation.
Add Botanicals
For a spa-like ambiance in the bedroom, consider refraining from TVs or cleverly conceal them behind framed botanical prints. This way, the focus remains on relaxation rather than entertainment. To create visual interest and distract from the TV, I used 6 matted frames to display six floral prints with blush tones, sourced from an art shop. Adding potted plants and flowers brings nature indoors, fostering a sense of calm.
I incorporated succulents, candles, and woven baskets to introduce warmth and texture. The result is a serene retreat that Kristina can escape to.
