Look For Inspiration & Gather Ideas

To begin designing your bedroom, start by collecting inspiration. Reflect on what styles and colors resonate with you. This initial step helps to define the direction of your design, preventing the overwhelming possibilities from pulling you in multiple directions. Consider how you want the room to feel – light and airy or dark and cozy? Note these emotions and what they evoke. Next, gather ideas that create this atmosphere. A great starting point is Pinterest.

Create a personalized inspiration board and pin images that perfectly capture your desired mood. Aim for at least 30 pins to gain a comprehensive understanding of your design vision. For me, designing Ellie’s bedroom was about creating a timeless, feminine space with a touch of glamour. After discussing possibilities with her, we decided on French country with a Boho flair. With our parameters in mind, my Mom and I went on a pinning spree, collecting more than enough inspiration images.

Choose The Color Scheme

After setting up your Pinterest Board and gathering inspiration, you should have a solid sense of how you want the room to feel. With this foundation, it’s time to bring bold colors into play – even in a small space. Consider incorporating statement hues on an accent wall and repeating coordinating colors in smaller doses throughout the room. When selecting the main color for your bedroom design, aim for a 70% coverage rate.

The floor is another excellent opportunity to inject color and texture, which will help ground the space. This approach can also create a sense of continuity, tying together various design elements. In our experience, tweens often have strong preferences when it comes to colors. Ellie, for instance, was adamant about not including pink in her new room – she’d outgrown that phase!

Instead, she fell in love with blush and gold, which we paired with navy and white to create a sophisticated, mature atmosphere. The unorthodox choice of navy as the dominant color made a dramatic statement. To amplify this effect, we used it on an accent wall, which gave the illusion of a larger space by adding depth and drama. This bold move also allowed us to incorporate blush and gold through accessories and fabrics, creating a cohesive look.

To achieve this look, repeat varying shades of navy throughout the room using bed upholstery, bedding, throw pillows, rug, roman shade, and accessories. By doing so, you’ll create a visually appealing space that perfectly captures your tween’s personality.

How Will This Room Need To Function To Serve Her Needs?

When designing a bedroom, it’s crucial to consider how the space is utilized daily. Think about what elements can be incorporated to streamline routines and enhance functionality. A bed, of course, is an essential element – we opted for a daybed against the wall to optimize floor space. However, most bedrooms lack sufficient storage, which was particularly important in this instance, given Ellie’s budding artistic talents.

To accommodate her creative pursuits and everyday needs, we aimed to create a space with ample room for art supplies and clothing storage. A larger desk was also required, so we settled on a built-in solution featuring drawers, shelves, and generous storage.

Make A List Of All The Elements You Want In The Room

As you move forward with designing your bedroom, start by compiling a comprehensive list of the essential elements you want to incorporate. This can include anything from small details like throw pillows and area rugs to larger features like built-in desks and French country daybeds. Don’t worry about prioritizing just yet – simply get everything down on paper, from must-haves to nice-to-haves.

This list will serve as a valuable guide for creating a realistic budget and ensuring that your design is functional and beautiful.

For example, the elements you might include are: French country daybeds with ample storage, dressers with extra shelves for storing linens and accessories, built-in desks with copious storage compartments, stylish window treatments, plush new bedding and throw pillows, bedside tables with lamps for cozy reading, updated light fixtures that provide warm ambiance, area rugs that add texture and warmth, and coordinating artwork and decorative accents.

Plan The Room Layout

Before diving into the bedroom design, create a plan for the layout. As visual thinkers, we prefer to map out the space. Use measurements of the room and furniture pieces to scale, and then move them around to decide on the best placement. This approach allows us to see how different elements interact with each other. In addition to traditional graph paper methods, digital programs like Floorplanner or Home Design 3D can be used to create more detailed, 3D renderings.

These tools enable us to test out color schemes by adding a desired hue to an accent wall and place furniture in the space to evaluate its flow. Digital room planners provide a unique visual aspect that helps us get a better feel for the design before committing to anything. We can also tape out the design on the floor, which may reveal limitations or opportunities we hadn’t considered previously. For this particular project, I chose to use Home Design 3D to create a more immersive experience.

The ability to walk through a 3D design allowed me to get a true sense of how the space would flow and feel. While visualizing the space in my mind is helpful, being able to see it in 2D or 3D format offers valuable insight into furniture placement and color scheme decisions. As we brought our bedroom design to life, the original dresser placement didn’t quite work as planned. A larger-than-expected dresser required a change of heart, ultimately leading to a more harmonious arrangement.

Create A Budget

As you begin designing your bedroom, it’s essential to prioritize the elements that are most crucial to achieving your desired look. Rather than feeling pressured to complete everything at once, be realistic about your timeline and spread out your spending over time. This will allow you to accommodate unexpected delays or changes in availability. To create a budget for your bedroom design, start by conducting a general search for the items on your list and calculating their costs.

If you find that certain pieces exceed your expectations or are outside of your price range, consider exploring second-hand options. Refinishing furniture or upcycling discarded items not only saves you money but also provides an opportunity to customize the pieces according to your design. Giving yourself a budget and sticking to it is crucial. Remember, there’s no joy in exceeding your desired spending amount! To track your expenses effectively, use a spreadsheet or the envelope cash system.

Divide your budget into specific areas of the room, allocating a set amount of cash for each area. Once the cash runs out, you know you’ve reached the end of that particular spending phase. In my experience, I find it helpful to gather rough estimates of the pieces I need to purchase, but I don’t calculate every last detail down to the smallest expense.

However, I do have a secret that works for me: selling items from previous bedroom designs that are no longer needed and using the earned funds towards the new design. This approach not only declutters my home but also provides a sense of financial gain. For instance, when designing our master bedroom makeover, I sold all of Ellie’s furniture, artwork, window treatments, chandelier, and bedding.

The buyer got an amazing deal on a complete room redesign, while I earned money to put towards the new design.

Create A Mood Board

While creating a mood board isn’t strictly necessary, it provides an effective visual representation of the bedroom design’s various elements. To create this visual representation, use a program you’re comfortable with, such as Photoshop, Canva, or Microsoft Word, and combine all the design components into a single collage.

This exercise allows for a final review of how each element will work together, giving you the opportunity to make any necessary adjustments before committing to a specific paint color or overall aesthetic. As someone who relies heavily on visual cues, I found that creating a mood board helped me visualize the end result and ensure that all the design elements meshed well together. While I did thoroughly review each component’s compatibility, I didn’t compile them into a single mood board.

As you embark on the thrilling journey of designing a bedroom, shopping for essential items becomes an integral part. With your overall aesthetic and layout plan in place, it’s time to source the necessary components – bedding, accessories, art, or any DIY elements that will bring your vision to life. Remember, take your time! Don’t rush into purchases, as finding the perfect piece might require patience. The room’s function, size, and style should guide your decisions.

Larger items come first, followed by smaller details. As DIY enthusiasts, we’ve learned the value of persistence. Scouring online marketplaces or local thrift stores, you may not find exactly what you’re looking for at first glance. It might take weeks to discover that perfect piece of furniture that fits your design and dimensions.

In our previous project, we began by painting the room a soothing shade of SW Pure White (matched to Behr Ultra) on three walls and ceiling, with an accent wall in Hale Navy (matched to Behr Ultra) at The Home Depot. We swear by Behr paint’s rich texture and won’t settle for anything less. Once all the DIY elements are in place, you can start accessorizing. If you come across an item that fits your design, purchase it – but be prepared to return it if it doesn’t quite work out.

We prefer using items we already have on hand first, which helps us gauge what’s needed to complete the look. Incorporating unique decor is another fun aspect of bedroom design.
