Lighten Up Your Bedding:
When it comes to updating your bedding for the warmer months, focus on incorporating elements that promote a cooler sleeping environment. This can be achieved by making the switch to breathable fabrics such as linen and cotton, which allow for excellent airflow and moisture wicking properties. For added visual appeal, consider opting for lighter color palettes or summery patterns that evoke feelings of freshness and serenity.
In place of heavy comforters, try layering light quilts or duvets that provide the perfect balance between warmth and breathability. Finally, choose sheets that prioritize cool sleep, such as this set, which is designed to keep you comfortable and relaxed throughout the night.
Introduce Summer Color Options:
To inject some personality into your coastal-inspired space, consider adding bursts of vibrant color. Think coral, turquoise, pink, sky blues, and sunny yellows – these hues will instantly brighten up the room and evoke a sense of optimism. For a more subtle approach, incorporate soft pastel shades that lend a beachy feel without being too overpowering. When it comes to creating a fresh, airy atmosphere, a base of pure white is hard to beat.
But don’t be afraid to mix things up with neutral tones like ivory, cream, taupe, or wheat – these earthy hues will ground the space and prevent it from feeling too ‘beachy’.
Bring the Outdoors in:
Infuse your space with a touch of nature by incorporating elements that bring the outdoors in. Consider adding low-maintenance potted plants or fresh flowers to your decor, allowing you to enjoy their beauty and benefits without the hassle of high-maintenance gardens. For a more subtle approach, hang botanical prints or nature-inspired artwork on your walls to create a soothing and calming atmosphere.
To further emphasize this theme, incorporate natural materials like rattan, jute, or bamboo into your decor items, such as woven baskets or planters. By incorporating these elements, you’ll be able to bring the serenity of nature indoors and create a peaceful retreat that promotes relaxation and rejuvenation.
Update Window Treatments:
Swap out heavy curtains for lightweight, airy alternatives that let in the sunshine. For added flexibility and control over the amount of natural light entering your space, consider installing light-filtering blinds or shutters. To add a pop of color and whimsy, incorporate colorful valances into your design – they’re the perfect way to infuse your home with a carefree summer vibe.
Declutter and Organize:
To banish the clutter that’s accumulated over the winter months, start by purging your space of any unnecessary items. This will not only free up physical room but also create a more airy and inviting atmosphere. One way to achieve this is by incorporating stylish storage solutions, such as beautifully woven baskets or ornate boxes, to keep your belongings organized while adding a touch of elegance to the space.
Additionally, consider simplifying your nightstand setup to achieve a clean and minimalist look that exudes serenity.
Incorporate Summer-themed Accessories:
To bring your space into alignment with the warm and inviting atmosphere of summer, consider incorporating natural elements that evoke the feeling of being by the ocean. This could include display pieces like seashells, driftwood, or beach-inspired accessories that add a touch of coastal charm to any room. Additionally, introduce vibrant colors and textures through tropical leaf-patterned throw pillows that add a pop of fun and whimsy to your decor.
Finally, welcome in the season with a festive summery wreath hung on the door or wall, its bright hues and playful charm setting the tone for a warm and sunny atmosphere.
Create a Relaxing Reading Nook:
Transform your reading nook into a haven of comfort by combining the right furnishings with strategic placement. Start by selecting a plush chair, perfect for curling up with a good book. Add a lightweight throw blanket or summery scarf to keep things cozy, and consider a Turkish towel for an added layer of warmth. Next, position a small side table nearby to hold your summer reads and refreshing iced beverages.
Finally, take advantage of natural light and fresh air by placing the nook near a window. This thoughtful arrangement will make you feel like you’re escaping to a relaxing retreat with every turn of the page.
Upgrade your Lighting:
To elevate the comfort and ambiance of your home, consider installing a ceiling fan that promotes better air circulation. As you can attest, we’ve been sleeping under our ceiling fan year-round without any issues. Additionally, adding string lights can create a whimsical atmosphere perfect for cozying up on chilly nights. Furthermore, swapping traditional lamp shades with light-colored or natural fiber ones can add a touch of warmth and elegance to your table lamps.
Refresh your Walls:
To revitalize your bedroom’s ambiance, consider a few refreshing updates. A light coat of paint in a warm, sun-kissed color can instantly brighten the space and make it feel more airy. Alternatively, opt for crisp white walls to create a clean and calming environment.
Take it up a notch by introducing an accent wall featuring removable wallpaper in a lively, summer-inspired design. This easy-to-remove option allows you to switch things up seasonally without committing to a permanent change.
Finally, add some visual interest with a gallery wall showcasing summer-themed prints or cherished photographs. The eclectic arrangement will add a playful touch and create a sense of storytelling in the room.
Don’t Forget the Floor:
Transform your bedroom into a refreshing oasis this summer by implementing these simple and stylish updates. First, consider layering a light, natural fiber rug over existing carpets to add warmth and texture. Alternatively, bring the outdoors in with a vibrant outdoor rug that adds an unexpected pop of color. For a truly minimalist look, leave floors bare and let the simplicity shine. These ideas serve as just the starting point for your summer bedroom refresh.
In my next post, I’ll be sharing my own master bedroom summer makeover, followed by 10 additional resources to inspire your seasonal decorating project. And don’t worry if you’re not updating a master bedroom – these same ideas can also be applied to a guest room or even other areas of your home.
Our Summer Bedroom Refresh
Our bedroom is a serene oasis, bathed in the warm glow of natural light that pours in from the east-facing window. While the summer sun may shift its position, our plantation shutters expertly filter the morning rays, preventing the room from overheating during the day. To perfect the ambiance, I often adjust the shutter tilt to diffuse the light and create a cozy atmosphere.
The walls of our bedroom are painted a soothing shade of Sea Salt by Sherwin-Williams, although we’ve always used Benjamin Moore paints in our home. This unique hue is described as a green-grey-blue, but in our space, it takes on a beautiful blue tone that’s simply enchanting. As the seasons change, this color transforms from a subtle blue to a lovely grey-blue, making it truly magical during the spring and summer months.
The ceiling above us is a clever 50% blend of Sea Salt, which creates a stunning visual effect when the swimming pool’s reflection dances across its surface. It’s as if we’re witnessing a whimsical light show every time we look up. To keep our bedroom fresh and exciting, I like to change the bed linens theme about four times a year, using different duvets and comforters to create unique looks. And why not? Even Christmas sheets get their moment in the spotlight!
Our Spring Bedroom Decor Looked Like This
As I transitioned my bedroom from winter to spring, I wanted to create a lighter, airier space that still reflected the beauty of the season. To achieve this, I started by swapping out the French Linen duvet cover and pillow shams for a white quilt with a blue floral pattern, which added a touch of springtime charm. The plaid bed skirt, custom-made for our bed eleven years ago, also got a boost from the new comforter’s complementary colors.
Meanwhile, I discovered pretty blue sheets with an abstract design that added a playful pop to the room. I also brought back a white coverlet that I’d previously used in the summer months, which not only lightened the overall aesthetic but also introduced a sense of continuity. The blue and white floral quilt, with its two-sided design, proved versatile enough to be folded in thirds for a cozy look.
To complete the transformation, I added vases filled with fresh flowers on each nightstand, providing a welcoming touch. However, I still need to find new lamps that better suit our summer decor – tall, solid, and three-way are my must-haves. Interestingly, some of the paintings in our bedroom have taken on a decidedly fallish hue, which has prompted me to seek out more summery pieces. Now, I’m curious: do you prefer the blue and white floral quilt’s design?
And what do you think of our master bedroom makeover – simple yet effective, with no cost to boot. The airy feel it gives is just what we needed.
